Ice Skating on Howard's PondIce Skating on Howard's Pond

Howard's Pond Elkton Maryland

This painting recreates an era when cold winters meant skating on the ice at Howard's Pond on East Main Street in Elkton, Maryland. Also called the Cow Pond, it was built in 1867 by Jacob A. Howard to supply ice to the local homes and businesses. After the ice was harvested it was used as a skating pond and people enjoyed the warmth of a bonfire while skating on winter evenings.
