About Geraldine McKeownAbout Geraldine McKeown

My artistic journey began as a small child growing up on our family farm surrounded by the beauty of the natural environment. My home and studio are located on this same land which has been in our family for 7 generations and my love of nature and the land runs very deep. I am frequently asked how long I have been painting. I can not remember a time when I have not been looking at the world through the eyes of an artist, eager to put my vision on paper or canvas.

I began my career as an artist painting from life in the studio and “en plein air”outdoors. I combine the knowledge learned from direct observation with sketches and photos for studio work.

The subjects I choose to paint are a reflection of my daily life and include the land, architecture and people around me. I am attracted to color, line, texture and light and I strive to capture a sense of time, place and season through mood and atmosphere. I am a traditional realist and have painted in transparent watercolor for over 30 years. I enjoy the luminosity of this challenging medium in which the white of the paper reflects the light. I have recently returned to the mediums of oil and acrylic when the subject calls for an opaque approach.

Art is a connection to the inner soul and my paintings are a direct response to a subject that has touched me emotionally. Being an artist is learning to see and for me the joy of painting is to capture and share a moment in time from the world around me.
